Siberia

"Siberia is Russia and more than Russia"

This is how the famous Russian writer Valentin Rasputin refers to Siberia (in his book Siberia, Siberia), citing this well-known Russian proverb. And he still stresses: "In those words, which did not appear today and became a proverb, there is no evidence of opposition or dispute. Siberia and Russia are one". And, in fact, from the Urals to the Pacific Ocean, which there is the Siberian immensity.

Sibéria (in Russian, Сибирь) is a vast region of Russia that stretches (from west to east) from the Urals to the Pacific Ocean and (from north to south) from the Arctic Ocean to northern Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China. The area of Siberia accounts for about 77% of all Russia. And even if it were just one country, Siberia, with more than 13 million km2, would still be the largest country in the world.

A World of Ice and Conifers

We imagine Siberia as an ice-covered immensity. But, in fact, its ecosystem is quite rich and varied: land lowlands, plateaus, mountains (Altai, Baikal, Kolyma, ...), rivers (including Ob and Yenisei), valleys and lakes. Many lakes. Vast coniferous forests and the tundra, the typical Siberian vegetation, in the northern part.

Lake Baikal

The Pearl of Siberia - The deepest lake in the world, Lake Baikal (in Russian О́зеро Байка́л) is one of Russia's wonders. It is located in southern Siberia, 70 km from Irkutsk, the fifth largest city in Siberia, to the northwest, in the state (oblast) of the same name. To the southeast, separating it from Siberia, is the Republic of Buryatia. In extension, the lake is 31,722 km2.

Main Cities of Siberia

Besides Novosibirsk, the third most important city in Russia and the largest in Siberia, other important cities are:

• Barnaul

Irkutsk

• Kemerovo

• Omsk

• Tomsk

• Tyumen

Trans Siberian Railway

The Trans-Siberian Railway (in Russian: Транссибирская магистраль or simply Транссиб, Transsib) is the best way for the traveler to discover all of Siberia and Lake Baikal. This 9,289 km long railway runs from Moscow to Vladivostok, in the far east of Russia. It is the third longest railway in the world: the first is Moscow-Pyangyang, with 10,267 and the second, Donetsk-Vladivostok, with 9,903 km.

The trip from Moscow to Vladivostok takes 7-8 days to complete and crosses seven time zones. An incredible adventure that takes us from Europe to Asia. There are interesting junctions that lead to Mongolia and Beijing (China) or with the Baikal-Amur Railway.
