Volgograd
The city of Volvograd (in Russian, Волгоград; in the Soviet era, Stalingrad), is one of the most important cities in
Russia from a historical point of view: the famous Battle of
Stalingrad, an unprecedented carnage. It is located 970 km southeast of
Moscow. During the Second World War it was the
scene of the bloodiest battle ever known, when millions of people perished on its battlefield.
Tsaritsin
When it was founded in the second half of the 16th century, it was called
Tsaritsin , because it is located
at the confluence of the Tsaritsa River with the Volga River. From 1925 to 1961, it adopted the name of Stalingrad. This name was adopted for
celebrate Stalin's victory over General Denikin's White Army troops. But, with destalinization,
from 1961 on they returned to call it Volgograd .
Mother Fatherland
Symbol of the Volgograd and the Resistance of Russia against Axis troops, the Statue of the Motherland (in Russian Родина-мать зовёт !, ie
Motherland is calling!), measures 85m and weighs eight thousand tons. It was once considered the largest statue in the world. Currently, it is still the largest
world woman statue. Perched high on the Mamayev Kurgan hill, this imposing and impressive monument commemorates the Battle of
Stalingrad. We remember that during the Second World War Russia lost about 26 million people.
